Rhode Island Collaborators

RI Public Universities

Summary

The US onAir Network will be working with volunteers from Rhode Island universities, colleges, and nonprofit organizations to oversee the curation and moderation of posts, aircasts (online discussions), and in person events for the Rhode Island onAir Hub …  related to federal, state, and local elections and government.

Our first outreach will be to University of Rhode Island partly because of its proximity to the state capital. We have identified many of University of Rhode Island ’s civic engagement, academic, internship and research programs related to making democracy and civic responsibility a focus of higher learning on their campus … for students, faculty, staff, and local community. This post, over time, will have similar information on other collaborating organizations in the state.

Contact ben.murphy@onair.cc for more information on how to involve your organization.

About

The University of Rhode Island’s onAir chapter will initially focus on training interested undergrad and graduate students on how to curate Rhode Island onAir content especially submitting Top News articles, events, videos, and information and moderating forums in each post they curate.

Student curators will also work with state senate and house committee chairs to produce aircasts on issues being discussed and bills being proposed in their committees.

During election season, students with other other organizations like the League of Women Voters, will coordinate and produce aircasted debates with candidates.

The University of Rhode Island is a diverse and dynamic community whose members are connected by a common quest for knowledge.

As a major research university defined by innovation and big thinking, URI offers its undergraduate, graduate, and professional students distinctive educational opportunities designed to meet the global challenges of today’s world and the rapidly evolving needs of tomorrow. That’s why we’re here.

With nearly 18,000 students representing 48 states and 76 countries, URI continues to grow.

In the last 12 years, $834M has been invested in capital projects and improvements across all four campuses, with new facilities for engineering, chemistry and forensic science, pharmacy, and communications. The 182,000 square-foot, $150M Fascitelli Center for Advanced Engineering, which opened in September 2019, rivals any in the world

The University of Rhode Island’s Center for Career and Experiential Education (CCEE) engages undergraduate students and alumni in a high quality personal and professional experience, from admission through employment. We are delighted to work with you on the journey from here to career.

The Clearinghouse for Volunteers seeks to create an engaged campus community through: service and community engagement that fosters student leadership; support for faculty scholarship in service learning; and direct service and advocacy work that meets local, state, national and global community needs.

Student Government

Source: Student Senate

Student Senate is made up of your elected undergraduate student representatives to work on issues important to you and the URI community. Topics range from academic to campus and commuter issues as well as policy. We want to hear from you. Call, email or stop by the office.

We are the official representative voice of the on & off campus undergraduate student body of the University of Rhode Island. Our Senator representatives are annually elected by our students.

As a diverse group of Student Senators, our purpose is to allow the general student opinion to be expressed. We assist students who live on & off campus by creating necessary bridges between our Under graduates and Academic Deans, faculty members, local landlords, etc.

We encourage the development of responsible student participation in the overall policy and decision making process of the university community. In order to enhance the quality and scope of education at the University, we foster an awareness of the students’ role in the academic community.

Internships

Research shows that completing an internship in order to gain experience and create networking opportunities is one of the most impactful experiences a college student can have.

Students at URI can gain experience in an internship through their academic department or through the CCEE ITR Internship Program at the Center for Career and Experiential Learning.

For more information about creating an internship program, best practices for hiring and supervision, and for sample internship descriptions please see  the Employer Guide to Creating a Meaningful Learning Experience for Students or contact our Employer Relations team with questions.

Political Science Programs

A complex maze of challenges faces our world today, and most of the problems—economic, environmental, social, or health-related, just to name a few—are interconnected. Although many of the scientific, financial, and technical solutions to these problems already exist, the barriers to fixing them are often political.

Studying political science opens up the whole world to you, giving you the tools you need to understand—and move—those barriers, and effect real change in the world.

Research Inititatives

Source: Research

At URI, we support ideas that transform the way we understand the world.

Our researchers are helping scientists understand the volume of sea ice production and improve climate models of deep ocean currents. Visionary creative thinkers are imagining new ways of experiencing music and the visual arts that encourage inclusion and diversity. Innovators are isolating new molecules from blooms of cyanobacteria for potential use as therapeutics against a wide range of diseases.

Breakthrough research is what we do.
